Now that Democrats control the U.S. Congress, many hope for a sea change in American foreign affairs.

Donald Rumsfeld is gone. The neo-cons are turning on Bush even faster than they turned on Conrad Black. James Baker’s Iraq Study Report is widely seen as a way for the president’s dad to bail his boy out of the mess he’s got himself into. The Iraq War seems to be all over but the shooting.

But the one thing that has gone largely unchallenged is the political world view that gave rise to the Iraq War in the first place, and which continues to push the United States and its Western allies into a confrontational posture against the Islamic world, against China, and potentially against every other major global player.
