NATION, CITZENSHIP AND BELONGING: MUSLIM CULTURAL POLITICS IN CANADA
May 21, 2009
Wilfrid Laurier University
Waterloo, Ontario
9am-6pm
Senate and Board Chambers and Paul Martin Centre
Muslims figure prominently in contemporary debates that shape our national consciousness and public policies from the Maher Arar case, security certificate detainees, the arrests of Muslim youth in Toronto on alleged charges of ‘home grown terror’, racial and religious profiling and the debates over shariah tribunals in Ontario to Quebec’s questions of ‘reasonable accommodation’, the banning of Islamic headscarves in soccer and face veils at the voting polls and xenophobic “Citizens Codes.” The Canadian Muslim diaspora is a complex, contradictory and hybrid space filled with a mix of liberatory possibilities and productive tensions that create the terrain for a distinctly “Canadian Islam’. This conference seeks to explore these issues that are shaping the Canadian social, political and cultural landscape and the field of Muslim studies in Canada.
