Group demands action on case rebuking CSIS – Spy agency’s conduct queried in sentencing of Canadian in U.S.

TORONTO, ONTARIO – The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is demanding to know why the government has overlooked a report that accused Canada’s spy service of breaking the law in the case of Mohammed Mansour Jabarah, a convicted terrorist now serving a life sentence in the U.S.

Alan Borovoy, CCLA general counsel, wrote Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day in February to ask what action had been taken against the Canadian Security Intelligence Service employees whose actions were deemed unlawful in a 2007 Security Intelligence Review Committee report.

“The Canadian Civil Liberties Association supports governmental co-operation with this country’s allies to counteract potential acts of terror,” Borovoy wrote. “We also believe, however, that Canada’s professed commitment to the rule of law requires its agencies and employees to observe the legal rights of those with whom they come into contact and conflict.”
