OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Omar Khadr’s U.S. military defence lawyer portrayed him yesterday to Canadian MPs in Ottawa as a typical Canadian – one who dreams of getting an education, watching Lord of the Rings and visiting the Rockies – as Mr. Khadr’s case came before a parliamentary committee for the first time.

Lieutenant-Commander Bill Kuebler and his civilian counterpart, Rebecca Snyder, appeared before a parliamentary human rights subcommittee studying Mr. Khadr’s case – a case on which the opposition and the government have been deeply divided.

Lt.-Cmdr. Kuebler began his statement by repeating the assertion that Mr. Khadr, who is now 21, is the last citizen of a Western nation still in detention in Guantanamo Bay. Lt.-Cmdr. Kuebler also quoted a recent poll that found a majority of Canadians don’t believe Mr. Khadr will receive a fair trial in Guantanamo.

“They are correct,” he added.
