Toronto, Ontario – And so the drama continues, with liberal Muslims like Tarek Fatah striving to monopolize the media narrative about Islam by portraying themselves as the moderates and labelling all other, more visible or more practising, Muslims as conservatives, extremists and – the most damning but nondescript label of all – Islamists.

I must say Fatah is doing an excellent job of encouraging Canadians to expect the worst of their Muslim neighbours and colleagues. His words sound oddly similar to those of right-wing zealots who believe Muslims are the cause of all evil in the world – except in his case, it’s “conservative Muslims” who are the source of all evil.

Fatah is free to disagree with the rules of Islam that don’t personally suit him, but he’s wrong to dismiss all Muslims who differ from him as extremist crazies. Sadly, this stereotype has been readily accepted as fact by the mainstream media. Otherwise, the casual reference to “the sexist and homophobic attitudes of conservative Muslims” would not have been printed without being accompanied by an opposing view.

Most offensive is the picture painted by Fatah of anti-war protesters demonstrating alongside Muslims who, supposedly, would like nothing better than to hang them for their disbelief in God. What an insult to every thinking individual.
