WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – A cadre of cranky writers is making scads of money by raving that religious leaders are tearing humanity apart. New developments, though, indicate they are full of stuff and nonsense.

A recent rant is from the old American neo-con warhorse, Norman Podhoretz, who was editor of the political magazine, Commentary, from 1965 to 1995. The title of his new book, World War IV, The Long Struggle Against Islamofascism pretty well sums up his views.

Islamofascism, he argues, is the ideological heir of fascism, Nazism and communism. It is fighting America in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world in what Podhoretz says is World War IV.

Christopher Hitchens, a cantankerous Vanity Fair columnist, has a similar line: We face a challenge from Islamic barbarism no less menacing than German imperialism in the First World War, fascism in the Second and Soviet Communism.
