Statement from M.P. Rob Oliphant (Don Valley West) on the attack against the Waterloo Masjid
TORONTO – In response to the attack against the Waterloo Masjid, Rob Oliphant, Member of Parliament for Don Valley West made the following statement.
“I was deeply saddened to learn about the attack on the Waterloo Masjid. Please know that I, residents of my constituency, members of the federal Liberal Caucus and Canadians as a whole, condemn these actions. We sincerely hope that those responsible will be brought to justice.”
On Thursday, March 18th the Waterloo Masjid was vandalized, with windows broken and offensive symbols spray-painted on exterior walls and doors. This incident follows similar events in Montreal and Hamilton where mosques have been vandalized. Upon learning of the attack, Mr. Oliphant spoke out against the attackers and stated his firm belief in the right of individuals to practice their religion without fear or intimidation.
“As a Member of Parliament and a United Church Minister I have a firm belief in the right of individuals to practice their religion without fear of violence or persecutions. I want to assure my Muslim brothers and sisters that the individuals that acted out against the Waterloo Masjid do not hold the same value as the vast majority of Canadians, who are outraged at last Thursday’s attack.”
Following the attack, the Muslim Society of Wellington Counties (MSWC) asked the Muslim community of Kitchener-Waterloo to remain calm. Mr. Oliphant joined the MSWC in this effort.
“I would like to thank the Muslim Society of Waterloo and Wellington Counties for their call for patience and tolerance. As part of the foundation of the Islamic faith, these qualities show the exceptional value that the Muslim community brings to Canada,” said Mr. Oliphant.
Anyone having information regarding last Thursday’s attack on the Waterloo Masjid, is asked to contact their local authorities.
