Statistics Canada Reports Drop In Police-Reported Crimes
From AHN
Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) – A report released by Statistics Canada on Tuesday showed a drop in police-reported crimes in 2007 compared to a decade ago.
The release of the Crime Severity Index also marked the index’s use as a police tool for the first time, to monitor changes in the severity of police-reported crime. Under the index each offense is assigned a weight, with more serious crimes given higher weights.
Using the new measure with 2006 as the base year with an index of 100, the 2007 index for overall crime was at 94.6 percent, a major drop from 119.1 percent in 1998. It means crime severity went down by about 20 percent during the past 10 years. The large drop was attributed to a major decline in incidents of break-ins at 40 percent.
What is quite alarming though is that despite the reduction in police-reported crimes, the Violent Crime Severity Index showed a 2 percent decrease only from a 1998 index of 98 percent to a 2007 index of 96.5 percent.
