We’ll address anti-Semitism in our report, commission says – Bouchard-Taylor panel incited hate, B’nai Brith contends
MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Criticized by a Jewish lobby group as having been a platform for rising anti-Semitism last fall, the Bouchard-Taylor commission says it will address the issue in its official report in a more objective way.
“We, ourselves, deal with the subject – there are pages about anti-Semitism,” said commission spokesperson Sylvain Leclerc, declining to reveal details before the report is made public in mid-May.
But it’s a stretch to say the commission’s hearings were the main cause of an increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Quebec in 2007, as B’nai Brith Canada claims, he said.
“B’nai Brith’s problem is they talk about anti-Semitic incidents by equating the torching of a synagogue, a physical attack and an anti-Semitic statement,” Leclerc said.
“Look, something’s out of whack. I have trouble understanding their methodology and their numbers, so when they draw conclusions on the commission, I wonder how they do it. The cause-and-effect is far from being obvious.”
In its annual “audit” of anti-Semitic “incidents,” B’nai Brith blamed the reasonable-accommodation commission – and specifically the “laissez-faire attitude” of commissioners Gérard Bouchard and Charles Taylor – for what it called rising “harassment” of Jews by “bigots” last fall.
