Confirmed Speakers:
Senator Mobina Jafer, 1st Canadian Muslim Senator
Her appointment to the Senate in 2001 represented many changes on Parliament Hill: she became the first Muslim to sit in the Canadian Senate. She is also the first African born Senator, and the first Senator of South-Asian descent. She wears these honours with pride, and her time in the Senate has focused on issues involving immigrant communities and minority women, as well as human and language rights.
Zarqa Nawaz, Executive Producer, Little Mosque on the Prairie
Zarqa Nawaz (Born 1968 in Liverpool, England) is a Muslim British-Canadian-Indo/Pak origin, raised in the Toronto area and attended Chinguacousy Secondary School. She is a freelance writer, journalist, broadcaster, and filmmaker living in Regina, Saskatchewan. “Little Mosque on the Prairie” was named after Zarqa’a obsession with the show of the 80’s “Little House on the Prairie”.
Dr. Monia Mazigh, Author of Hope and Despair (Wife of Mahr Arar)
Monia Mazigh first entered the public spotlight when her husband was in 2002 by the US government, on suspicion of terrorist links. He was tortured and held without charge for over a year before being returned to Canada. Mazigh joined with a number of human rights groups to press the government for his release. She is also the author of a book titled “Hope and Despair”, which is now available nation-wide.
