HEADLINE: New world order based on hypocrisy
BODY:
The Western willingness to act in response to Iraqi violation of the no-fly zone and the lack of any real action with respect to the plight of Bosnians, coupled with the inaction on the expulsion of 415 Palestinians out of Israel clearly illustrates the hypocrisy of the mostly Western powers at the helm of the U.N. Security Council.
In the new world order, some states are given freedom to do as they please, while others are held to strict compliance of international law.
Why doesn’t the Security Council authorize the use of force, or at least lift the arms embargo against Bosnia and thus allow it to defend itself pursuant to article 51 of the U.N. Charter? Why is the Security Council not showing any willingness to compel Israeli compliance of international law?
Compare these cases with the treatment of Iraq, and the imposition of sanctions against Libya for not turning over alleged terrorists to the West – even though Libya offered to turn them over to the U.N.
The swiftness and character of the response from the Security Council appear to depend on the relative position of the aggressor state in the new world hierarchy – a pyramid with the top reserved for the West, and the bottom for the undesirable (not within the Western sphere of influence).
For the true attainment of a new world order, this selectivity must be replaced with consistency and the Security Council must be reformed – from a Western old boys’ network to one that is truly reflective of the world.
